The slicing capabilities of 5G networks enable traffic categorization and thus prioritization. Cloud gaming is an example of network traffic that not only requires fast download speeds but, more importantly, low latency. Traditionally, all traffic is treated equally, leading to congestion and slow-downs, especially during sporting and music events. AT&T is expanding its 5G network to support such significant events tests also gaming traffic prioritization, which will dramatically improve the consistency of the cloud gaming experience. That way, the data exchange between the gaming app and the servers will be served regardless of other network traffic and thus might be a breakthrough for network users. Application-aware traffic prioritization is an exciting area enabled by new networking technologies and is worth further research.
