General Motors have recently announced their new end-to-end software platform called Ultifi, which enables frequent and seamless delivery of software-defined features, apps, and services to customers over the air and offers the potential for more cloud-based services. Examples of potential features include facial recognition of the vehicle’s owner to start the engine, detection of children to automatically trigger the car’s child locks, or automatically closing the car’s sunroof when the weather services are predicting rain.

Similar network-based capabilities are being unveiled by other automakers, including Ford and Tesla. The cloud connectivity could potentially extend to V2X or vehicle-to-everything applications, which are not mainstream just yet. However, existing cars are being equipped with network-based features. For that reason, this type of internet traffic should be taken into account in the optimization algorithms, including its unique QoS requirements such as latency.
